charlie, go to iTunes store and search for iSwifter. This is a third party server process that allows certain apple platforms to use Java which Apple does not support in all products.

Cams become problematic because you are going through a third party server so it gets slow at times. Also, an external keyboard rather than the onscreen keyboard helps.
