What is the Unlink (Friends) command for? Why might you Unlink but not Remove someone from the list? Is Unlink like Purgatory while Remove is like Hell;)?

sorry about the wait

unlink is when you just want them moved out of your linked, where as remove deletes them completely from your profile.

Other than saying linked and un-linked in the person's friend picture, is there any functional or operational difference between linked and unlinked?

yes, when you are linked your two profiles are linked to each other
