He walks out from the empty parking lot, just more like a little pull off on the side of the road. He pulls up his collar, trying to keep the wind at bay. Walking slowly to the edge, hunting for the opening that will lead him down the steep trail. As he slowly picks his way over the rocks wet with the mist in the air his mind wanders. Wanders back to better times, times when his heart wasn’t so……….heavy.
As the trail widens and finally gives way, his feet are sinking into the sand. He scans out over the cold desolate beach towards the water. Looking up and down the beach, he sees no one. Summer is out of reach. Even the waves are crashing, violently against the shore, reminding him this is no longer summer. That time of happiness, warmth, sunshine. All he has now is cold, mist, and emptiness.
Somehow it is fitting, somehow it all makes sense. Even nature, has turn against him. Might as well, what is left? The joys nature had given him in the past, just like her has turned cold, forbidding, and dark.
But his feet still move, he walks closer to the water. Water………….he once thought of it as healing water, soothing water, safety. But now he only sees an icy grave. His life was lived for water. Times spent in it, on it, sitting back and just watching it, the beauty of it. But now………it has turned on him. The mist has now turned to rain.
He stands at the edge, wanting nothing more than to continue his walk. A walk into the water, but he knows, he can’t.
He turns and starts up the beach, hunting that place. The place that started it all. The place where……………..he found his joy and happiness. The one that now is crushing him. The memories.
Walking along he wonders where she is now, what she is doing? Who she is with? But mostly the why?
He comes to that place and he looks up toward the rocks, yes it was back there, at the edge of the beach where it happened. That day where he lost his heart to her. As if by magic, his feet moved to that spot, one last time. And then, he was there.
The sun is out bright, the cool breeze has made this hot day bearable. And she is there by his side. He shakes his head, and the cold rain is felt once again.
He sits on the cold wet sand and turns to face the wind. Eyes barely opened and lets the misery swallow him. He is lost.
Nighttime has come, he feels the sting, the burn of the overexposure to the sun. But all is right. The moon has risen in the sky. Full and silver. The light is dancing on the waves, long streaks here and there, but mostly little diamonds reflecting on the wavetops. And he feels her closeness. She is beside him now and she has her head, resting on his shoulder. He turns and looks at her face. The moonlight is lighting up her eyes, like the diamonds on the water. He sees something else there too. He can now feel it. Her closeness, her breath, her……………love.
His lips reach for hers and is rewarded. The kiss of a lifetime, the kiss that signaled they were meant to be together for eternity. The kiss of love.
As the kiss lingered, ebbing and flowing. Signals being transmitted. He wraps his arms around her and pulls her as tight as he can to himself. Trying to let her know, he never wants to let her go. And they slowly lower themselves to the sand. How long? How long was the kiss? Who knows, it seemed to last forever, but still it wasn’t long enough. He looks on her face, makes out the fading freckles on her nose, and gives them a kiss. She opens her eyes and he sees something new in them. She closes them and he had to give them a soft kiss too.
She puts her arms around him and pulls him down, but not to her face, but to her breasts, slowly guiding him where she wants him to be. And he knows, tonight will be the beginning of forever.
Now the soft love, the gentle caresses have turn more to passion, from one type of love to another. One a little more desperate, a little more powerful……..a little more eager., a little more satisfying.
Clothes are shed, and hearts are racing as they use their hands to explore new territories, new land, new adventures. Hands and then lips roan freely over the vast rangeland of the new world. The night heats up, and bodies turn hot and then it finally happens. They have found those parts that were made for one another, designed to fit. And so, they check, and find the fit to match. Slowly at first, with caution, but with each step, growing bolder, and bolder until the walk has turn to a race, both sprinting, running towards the finish line. But the odd thing, they weren’t running for themselves, each one was running for the other, spending themselves, their energy for the other, willing them to cross that line first. And then cross they did, in a dead heat, a tie and both were winners of that race.
When the breathing slowly returned to normal, they looked at each other and smiled. Both were filled with something, he had his happiness, she had him.
And now, she was gone, and he had nothing but the memories. And cold wet sand.
